Gamma ray burst may strike again
6 Apr 2009, 0000 hrs IST, AGENCIES

A brilliant burst of gamma ray killed most of the creatures on Earth some 440 million years ago, and researchers say, a similar celestial
catastrophe could happen again. Most gamma-ray bursts are thought to be streams of high-energy radiation produced when the core of a very massive star collapses. The new computer model shows that a gamma-ray burst aimed at Earth could deplete the ozone layer, cause acid rain, and initiate a round of global cooling from as far as 6,500 light-years away, reports National Geographic News.

Such a disaster may have been responsible for the mass die-off of 70% of the marine creatures that thrived during the Ordovician period (488 to 443 million years ago), suggests study leader Brian Thomas, an astrophysicist at Washburn University in Kansas.

The simulation also shows that a significant gamma-ray burst is likely to go off within range of Earth every billion years or so, although the stream of radiation would have to be lined up just right to affect the planet. Currently WR104, a massive star 8,000 light-years away, is in position to be a potential threat, Thomas noted.

But the study, which has been submitted to the International Journal of Astrobiology, isn’t necessarily sending other astrophysicists into a panic. “There is certainly no harm in looking at what a gamma-ray burst might do if it were close enough to us, as this author has done. That’s the way science works,” said David Thompson, a Nasa astrophysicist and deputy project director on the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope.

*Kaboom*!!! Crazy stuff.

We're so fragile. It's amazing that such a relatively small thing- cosmologically speaking- could just... wipe us out.

It reminds me of the Shoemaker-Levy comet striking Jupiter. We're very fortunate to have that gravity well (which was *just small enough* to not become a brown dwarf, thus making the solar system a binary system and not allowing any life, anywhere, in the solar system- probably) and it was amazing to watch.

There are conflicting theories about the Ordovician/Silurian mass extinction; it could also have been mass vulcanism or hypoxia in the seas.

Important thing to note about Gamma Ray Bursts is that most of the energy is collimated (for reasons not well understood) along the axis of the star - unless we are facing the N or S pole of a massive star it's unlikely earth would get hit by a GRB.

Oh yea- I forgot that gamma rays, being very short-wave, don't carry too far.

Don't they mostly get blocked by the atmosphere anyway?

The Horsemen seem to be released every couple of years. Tell me, how long has it been since Revelations was written; how many years has it been since the 'end times' were immanent? Been a while... I'd say it'll be a while yet, if ever.

yes maybe so, but it seems to be a chain reaction lately , where one ends the other starts, animals are becoming exintinct, food is scarce , one catastrophe after another, the ozone layer, climate change, the poles are melting, there is war, again, where one ends another starts, pestilence, cancer and aids are an epidemic, etc etc, and not in world history has this happened over and over again within weeks and days of each other.Have a think about it.

It *has* happened over and over in history. At the same time. Or nearly. The difference now is that we can see these things happen (well- measure it, anyway) with instruments. Things are just about the same as they always were. We're not about to hear hoofbeats on the glade; the world will drag on as it always has.

Didn't think so.

Again: No.

Very wise and holy men have said exactly the same thing you have, for exactly the same reasons, talking about the same natural events, since the book was canonized.

This is beyond old hat; it's depressing and laughable.

Electromagnetic radiation of any wavelength has an infinite range in vacuum.

And yes, they're quickly absorbed by atmosphere but are energetic enough to cleave apart nitrogen and oxygen molecules and create large quantities of nitrous oxide in upper atmosphere... The result beng that the stuff reacts with ozone and removes our natural protection from harmful UV and also is a greenhouse gas.

It is indeed a disaster prone world, that we are living in.

Dear ying-yang, indeed yes, :) , and, it's not just me, even my forefathers, since the past 1000 years in India, have had lived the misery brought in by the deadly middle eastern disease called islam.

Dear sevens,

Thanks very much, for taking time to go through my post. Meanwhile, I just glanced through the main webpage you have provided, and it seems to be very interesting and knowledgeboosting. I will certainly make it a point to surf it thoroughly ,once I have a few hours' time at my disposal.

Sincerely,

Thanks for taking the time for checking my work, I really appreciate your kind words. It has been a long daily journey for the last few years where i have thrown everything into it. I feel we are coming close to the consummation of prophecy contained in all the books of religion.

I feel there is real coordination of the Spiritual forces of the Local System Government and all things will emanate from the Judgment Seat surrounded by the 24 elders in the Local System Headquarters from where all things come from concerning our planet which includes many other sentient planets in our constellation.

I sense judgment is on the way and we have to be prepared in hearts for the reception of the Sovereign of this Universe as he comes to visit us to perform the final Judgment.

Jesus is about the come to adjudge the age and this message I feel is the counterpart of what is to come.

Also the character in the end days who assists Jesus is identified in name and in birth who does fulfill Quranic prophecy knowing that my Mother name is Ina or Armina and whose maiden name is contained within the Shabbes word meaning Seventh. Ever considered Mabus...abus...abbes and consider the BarAbbes in the story of Jesus. Also in Sikh religion the last guy who kills Koli is born on the 14th May and that is my birthday.

Everything is being fulfilled right now as we speak and its the most beautiful and compelling journey on the planet, there is no other message on the planet representative of the Universe Government except for this message.

In my heart I pray for all Muslims and Christians and there families and anyone can be part of this journey of truth to the end of this age.

all the best and great blessings

I just praise the Lord Father in the Kingdom of Heaven and in the muslim culture I praise Allah in Paradise for all his great blessings. There is an invitation for all religions to be part of this for when the bride comes for his people.
