I don't have it on hand, but I don't think it's in the Quran. It's in the Hadith.

thanks sword.

I can't believe I'm asking this because I think I should know - but do Muslims view the Hadith as having all truth as well as the Koran?

You need to read (and study for years) the hadits to understand the Quran, or so some say. Now I wonder, have ALL muslims done this? If no (and I suspect this is the case for the majority) then why are they following a faith they cannot understand?

Theologically speaking, you can't understand the Qur'an without the Hadith, since the Hadith have the instances of revelation, background to how the Qur'an is supposed to be interpretted (ie. not allegorically, but literally), and the examples for how you should live.

Take the hadith away, and you have a text with no meaning! In the words of Nevo and Koren, it was like the Qur'an appeared one night and no one knew what to do with it!!!

You could use the famous beat them verse in collabaration with the Hadith to prove the point. IE, the men being "maintainers and protectors of women" and also them being able to banish them from their beds and beat them if they fear disobedience.

here is one verse from Quran that says women must be confined to home although with a "lewd" qualifier
004.015
YUSUFALI: If any of your women are guilty of lewdness, Take the evidence of four (Reliable) witnesses from amongst you against them; and if they testify, confine them to houses until death do claim them, or Allah ordain for them some (other) way.
PICKTHAL: As for those of your women who are guilty of lewdness, call to witness four of you against them. And if they testify (to the truth of the allegation) then confine them to the houses until death take them or (until) Allah appoint for them a way (through new legislation).
SHAKIR: And as for those who are guilty of an indecency from among your women, call to witnesses against them four (witnesses) from among you; then if they bear witness confine them to the houses until death takes them away or Allah opens some way for them.
