I wonder if you have seen the rather entertaining Terry Pratchett series called the "hog father". While raising a great deal of smiles there are also some surprising ideas found in this piece of writing....
One is about beliefs:
The story goes as people stop believing in the "hog father" the actual "belief" is not simply lost, but like matter in the universe, transferred to something else.
So new beliefs spring up who in turn generate new mythical creatures, in the story, suddenly things like the "verruca gnome", the "hair loss fairy", the "oh-god of hangover", and a sock monster stealing single socks appear. Because one belief is lost another is created.
This is in fact quite true. As one belief is abandoned another takes its place, sometimes a much better one, helping humanity on their way to reach their potential, sometimes a much worse one, causing many problems and even bloodshed.
Everybody has some beliefs, and when we loose one we gain another.
Jesus: "Ask and you will receive." Mohammed: "Take and give me 20%"
