Old texts or art and modern minds

Have a good look at this picture:

Image

It is a part of a painting called "the expected one" from the 19th century, currently found in the "Alte Pinakotek", an art gallery and Museum in Munich, Germany.

What is woman holding in her hand... believe it or not, it has been suggested she is looking at a smart phone, and this found surprising amount of agreement. So the painting became "proof" for "time travel" and such....

So what has happened? Something very silly,, but incredibly common. Someone has looked at an old picture with modern eyes, and ignored the age of the painting entirely, but merely stated what it "looked like" for an 21st century man. In fact, for this particular painting we have a contemporary description, stating that the object in the woman's hand is a small, personal prayerbook, something we have many examples of in the museums and libraries of Europe.

But to the hard-core "believers", it remains a woman with a smart phone, and the actual explanation is "fake news"....

We have many similar things... people telling us about dinosaurs in Aztec art, saying the world is "really" only a few thousand years old, or telling us about drawings of spacemen, of "scars" on the moon left by Mohammed's sable, and much more.

All is part of the same kind of fallacy.

Sadly this also applies to treating TEXTS as something other than products of people of a particular place and time.

Perhaps other can supply some more or better examples?
Jesus: "Ask and you will receive." Mohammed: "Take and give me 20%"

It's not only beauty that's in the eye of the beholder - I instinctively, through my rheumy old eyes, took it to be not a prayer book but a glass of brown ale she was holding!
