Italy declares humanitarian emergency over refugee influx

The Italian cabinet on Saturday "proclaimed a state of humanitarian emergency following the influx of the large number of citizens from North Africa," the government said in a statement.

Rome said the decision would enable authorities "to take immediate action needed to control this phenomenon and assist citizens who have fled from North Africa."

Interior Minister Robert Maroni said on Sunday he would formally ask Tunisia for permission to deploy Italian police within the North African country to block further immigrants from leaving for Italy.

"The Tunisian system is collapsing," Maroni said on television.

Earlier on Sunday, the Italian coast guard said almost 1,000 Tunisian immigrants had arrived in Italy overnight.
That follows statements on Saturday by local authorities on the island of Lampedusa which said that nearly 4,000 people had landed there since Wednesday. The majority are Tunisians seeking asylum in the wake of the political unrest that unseated President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.
Most of the refugees arrive packed into smalls fishing boats intercepted by Italy's coast guard and then taken to Lampedusa.

The arrivals are threatening to overwhelm local authorities on the small island, which recently shut down camps designed to house illegal migrants.

Most refugees face deportation

Italy has begun to transport the majority of the immigrants to identification centers in Sicily, but authorities are struggling to keep up with the influx. Should they fail to make a case for asylum, most of the refugees will be deported back to Tunisia.

Interior Minister Roberto Maroni already on Friday had warned of an impending crisis. Rome also made a formal request for EU assistance.

Foreign Minister Franco Frattini requested "the immediate deployment of a (EU border security agency) Frontex mission for patrolling and intercepting off the Tunisian coast."

I thought things were improving there? What's going on?

Why should what happens in Tunisia impact on Italy? Its totally unfair. They take the burden (along with Greece) of all the bad passing through to Britain.... an Island with no borders and the European court of human rights (or Geneva convention) dictate that we keep them even though according to their own rules that asylum seekers or refugees should head to the nearest border for safety and protection.... its a complete farce now as under European rules, they can go wherever they want when they land in a European Country.... its a bit like hitting the bingo when you know your human rights allow you to import your family as well.

If we took a rocket to the moon to escape them.... they would end up building one to follow us.

apparently the Tunisian revolution is no revolution at all but a fiasco.

All Muslim Countries are ruled by strong totalitarian dictatorships, whether its Royalty or military.... they need to ask themselves why and why we have let it go on for so long.... I think the answer is that it needs an iron fist to keep these people in line. Egypt will end up with what it had in the first place, a military dictatorship portrayed as the peoples right while they continue to suppress. I couldn't give a damn about them until they really begin to give a damn about themselves.... if they really want democracy then the battle has only just started.

If Muslims free themselves from hate... they can free the world.

Isn't it amazing, Tunisian Muslims seeking shelter in the land of the Pope? They should be going to Saudi Arabia, the Land of Islam. Muslims hate kaffirs but they stay away from the lands of the believers!

It is tempting to think that these "revolutions" could be a subtle attempt at demographic jihad as those who are pushing the Islamic agenda know that thousands of muslims will leave and migrate to the West, increasing the percentage of muslims in the West while they increase their Islamic hold after the "revolution". The West is certainly going to pay a demographic price for these changes in the ME and North Africa.

Minister of the Interior Maroni is worried about 80,000 arrivals. At this point colonialism seems like the only merciful thing to do. Don't bother coming here, we'll go there.
