Two Muslim women marched out of swimming pool in French holiday village because they were wearing burkinis
Two Muslim women were ordered out of a swimming pool in France because they were wearing 'burkinis'.

They jumped into the water wearing garments that covered their entire bodies, including veils over their heads.

The incident came ten days after French MPs voted to outlaw the burka in public places.

The new law, which brands the garment 'an insult to the country's values', means women will be fined or jailed for hiding their faces in public.

The women at the Rives des Corbieres holiday camp in Port Leucate, southern France, were told the rules stated only swimming costumes may be worn in the water.

They were asked to either change into conventional bikinis or one-piece costumes or leave the swimming pool.

Police were then called to the drama on Wednesday after the husband of one of the women threatened the pool's lifeguard with a bowling ball.

A holiday camp spokesman said: 'The husbands became very irate that their wives were not allowed to swim with their bodies covered, and one of them threatened violence.

'Police were called and he eventually backed down. The two Muslim couples left the pool area and no charges were brought.'

Regional government official Marie-Paule Bardeche said: 'This is an issue stemming from the holiday centre's own regulations.

'They state men and women must wear ordinary swimwear for hygiene reasons. Men are not even allowed to wear long shorts in the water.'

Last year a Muslim woman was banned from wearing a burkini at a public swimming pool also for hygiene reasons.

She later failed in her bid to sue the council in the Paris suburb for discrimination.

Police have this year also stopped and fined two women for wearing a burka while driving because the garb impaired their field of vision.

Woohoo! Good on the French for doing this! They know how to stand up for their values!

Awww.... so the poor Muzzy-wuzzies had their feelings hurt. Diddums.
Hopefully there will be **much** more of this in the months and years to come.

Ummm, I thought Muslim women had to swim in the presence of other women only, not even husbands were allowed in a public setting.

First off, the Bart Simpson....way too funny. We need more of that. I am against this objection to the swim burka. People have the right to dress how they want. They do not get to dictate who swims with them, but they get to decide how they want to dress. I am against banning the burka, I am for banning closed swimming times. If your religion doesn't want you to swim mixed sexes, build your own pool, do not expect a public pool to accommodate you.

I don't see much of a problem with burkinis, its little too picky unless there is some hygine problem associated with it, then I can understand.

Not sure if France banned covering of head, that again should be allowed its little on the picky side.

Burka should be banned all over west

In the end its their country, if they want to see everybody in their country dress up in a way that represents their culture, than you do it, or just don't live there and come back home. No crying no burning of cars, no complains. Yes you do have the right to complain if first you let Stacy walk the street of Kuwait or Karachi in shorts, then you can complain about Burka not allowed.

I think they are unhappy about covering up the face... they compare it with driving a car without a number plate...

Nobody would object to covering the hair,if that is a choice someone makes. Some non-Muslim women do that too. The problem is that it should be something a woman chooses to do. If a woman covers her hair because otherwise her husband will beat her, that is a completely different matter. It's her head, and she should decide what to put on it.

As to what swim wear someone should wear, I don't understand why the fuss... who did the woman offend? Is there a dress code for pools or something?

The only thing that would worry me about wearing a lot of clothing when swimming is that waterlogging may make swimming difficult, but I am sure if someone sells garments like that they would have thought of that and ensured it's safe, by using sensible fabrics, and careful design.

I think the French openly recognize the threat that islam is to their society, their freedom, their safety & everything else they hold dear. The burkini/burka issue is their way of saying "This far & NO farther!" & the muslims know it. That's why they are getting mad. The secrets getting out. Religious bullies are coming to your town & if you let them, they will take it over.
