Muslim Cleric Faces Backlash After Saying Muhammad was Originally Christian

He further stated that Muhammad was the assistant to a Christian preacher named Waraqa Bin Nofal.

On a show on the LTC television station, Rashed claimed that Khadija, Muhammad’s first wife, was also Christian. Rashed stated that Muhammad was married to Khadija before his divine revelations and his marriage to a Christian is further proof that he was a Christian himself.

Another religious scholar from Al-Azhar University participated in the program and denied Rashed’s theory. According to Sheikh Muhammad Hamoude, Muhammad was not a Christian and it is not known whether he maintained a friendship with Bin Nofal.

Shiekh Rashed’s comments invited a storm on social media, where Zahim Alshamri, a Twitter user in Saudi Arabia, wrote, “Now this has crossed the limits of madness. He took some serious drugs. May Allah erase you and your mind.”

A Syrian social media user, Elias Alabdullah, wrote, “Allah protect us, what exactly is happening in Egypt?”
Egypt? Well, perhaps the old song got it the wrong way round, and really "The Egyptians were Irish long ago"!

This is a tricky one to get any certainty on. We certainly know that Mohammed must have met and talked to Christians, and that these were not the kind we find many of today, they must have been Nestorians. I won't go into the differences, but perhaps it is important that Nestorians emphasise the HUMANITY of Jesus rather more than mainstream, which may go some way towards explaining the way Muslims see Jesus.

Still we can be sure he contact with Christians as he has included Christian narratives into the Qur'an. However, some of the materials he used clearly show that his contact were not orthodox Christians. For example, the story of the infant Jesus talking in the cradle found in the Qur'an, is not biblical, but taken from the Syriac "Gospel of infancy" from around 450 AD, a much later, apocryphal text.

We also know that he used, on the advice of his wife Kadhija, a Christian monk or hermit to "confirm" his prophethood for the first time. If he did confirm Mohammed or not, we don't know for sure as, strangely, he died within a very short time of that meeting, so nobody could ever check. We do know, however, that Mohammed never again placed reliance on Christians to support his claims after that, which suggests the meeting did not go as commonly described in Muslim sources. (It would also be quite odd for such a confirmation being given, as it is against Christian teachings: As Jesus is the "fullness of revelation" there is no room for further prophets in Christianity.)

However, as Khadija picked a Christian first to confirm Mohammed, this suggests that she either was a Christian or at least close to them on some ways. But then there is also her plan to get Mohammed to run the Kaaba... hardly a Christian aim.

So my view is that Khadija, like Mohammed, knew and for a time respected some Christians, probably like many people surrounding them. So it is much more likely she merely used Christians as a means to an end when her plan for Mohammed developed.

Another pointer suggesting this cannot be quite right is the story of Mohammed placing the main idol on the blanket to get all the chiefs to carry it into the Kaaba. If Mohammed had been a Christian they would hardly want him get involved in their problem. To accept his proposal is a very strong suggestion that he in fact followed the same religion as his tribe.
Jesus: "Ask and you will receive." Mohammed: "Take and give me 20%"

Looks like you've uncovered yet another plagiarism, Manfred - and a big one!
