'PA, Hamas systematically abuse Palestinian journalists'

Human Rights Watch report documents attacks on reporters, cites Gaza man detained after finding a man Hamas claimed was killed by Israelis was actually alive.

The Palestinian Authority and Hamas systematically abuse Palestinian journalists, according to a Human Rights Watch report released Wednesday.

"Severe harassment by Palestinian Authority and Hamas security forces targeting Palestinian journalists in the West Bank and Gaza has had a pronounced chilling effect on freedom of expression,"

Human Rights Watch said, calling on the PA and Hamas to

"hold their security forces to account for systematic, severe abuses."

Human Rights Watch recounts cases of torture, beatings and arbitrary detainment of journalists by security forces in a 35-page report titled No News is Good News.

Joe Stork, deputy Middle East director at Human Rights Watch said in a statement that

"Palestinian security forces are becoming notorious for assaulting and intimidating journalists who are just trying to do their jobs."

"Both the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank and Hamas in Gaza need to end these blatant attacks on free expression,"

Stork added.

In one reported case, Hamas security forces detained an Al Quds radio reporter and attacked him

"in a morgue where he had reported on a man, supposedly killed by Israeli military attack, who was discovered still to be alive."

"The majority of abuses against journalists in both the West Bank and Gaza have been related to tensions between the PA and Hamas,"

according to Human Rights Watch's report. On March 19, Human Rights Watch reported, 15 Hamas security men raided Reuters offices in Gaza, smashing computers and beating journalists during demonstrations in favor of Hamas-Fatah unity

The PA detained independent journalists suspected of working for Al Jazeera, which the PA has accused of being pro-Hamas.

The Center for Development and Media Freedoms, a Palestinian rights group, said that the number of attacks on journalists, arrests and confiscations of equipment rose by 45 percent in 2010.

Human Rights Watch's report says that

"abuses by Hamas in Gaza as well as by Israeli military forces throughout the occupied Palestinian territories will be the focus of future reporting."

Western media AGAIN fall for ‘fauxtography’ from the Pallywood Propanda machine

The apparent fake photo (below) carried the caption, ‘A Palestinian construction worker screamed in pain after he tried to block an Israeli Army driver who drove a trailer over his legs near Hebron. Israeli forces were seizing the trailer from construction workers because the site was in a zone where Israel prohibits Palestinians from building on their land.’


CAMERA In the past, Reuters was the wire service most associated with ”fauxtography” of the Arab-Israeli conflict, but it seems that Agence France-Presse may also be getting in the act. On Jan. 25, the AFP photo service carried an image by photographer Hazem Bader in which a Palestinian construction worker is said to be screaming in pain after he was run over by a trailer driven by an Israeli soldier. The photo appeared on page 4 of the International Herald Tribune (at least in the Israeli edition) on Thursday (Jan. 26).


Yet, after checking with both Palestinian and Israeli sources, it seems that the man was not at all injured, and there is no evidence that he was run over. On the Palestinian side, the Palestinian Center for Human Rights (PCHR), which provides comprehensive weekly reports about all injuries, fatalities, incursions, and other incidents in both the West Bank and Gaza, makes no mention of this alleged injury in its report for Jan. 19- 25. In addition, the Palestinian Ma’an News Agency did not cover the alleged injury, even though it does report on Israeli army activity that day nearby in Tel Rumeida. Presumably, then had this worker actually been run over and injured on Wednesday, Ma’an would have carried the story. Nor does it appear that any English-language wire service or other media outlet covered the alleged injury.

On the Israeli side, Capt. Barak Raz, spokesman for the Judea and Samaria division who had spoken to soldiers at the scene, told CAMERA the following: IDF soldiers were on site to provide security for the Civil Administration, which was preventing Palestinian construction in an area not permitted for building. One Palestinian worker was lying on the ground next to the trailer when he started to scream that he had been run over. Nobody saw him get run over. First he complained that his left leg was injured. An army medic checked him and saw nothing. The medic did, nevertheless, wrap him in a bandage since the worker was carrying on that he had been run over. The man then subsequently claimed that it was his right leg which was injured. According to Raz, the Palestinian Red Crescent, which was also on the scene, checked him, and likewise found absolutely nothing wrong with him.

In short, at worst, this incident is staged, as Raz contends, and the man pretended to be run over and injured, while neither happened. At best, there is zero independent confirmation that he was injured. If neither AFP nor IHT can substantiate the claim, it ought to be immediately retracted

Viral photo of abusive Israeli soldier called a fake


REPORTING FROM JERUSALEM -- A controversial photograph that has been circulating on the Web in recent weeks is challenging such pre-Internet truisms as "seeing is believing" or "sharing is everything."

About six months ago, @madlamin tweeted a picture with a message in French encouraging users to spread it around the world in 48 hours. The photograph of a soldier pointing a rifle at a little girl on the ground with his boot on her was marked with a #Syria hashtag, suggesting to users it was related to the bloody riots that have been occurring in that country in recent months.

The picture eventually did make it around the online world, but it somehow became associated with a different conflict: the Israeli-Palestinian one.

The same photo is now said to show an Israeli soldier abusing a Palestinian girl. It went viral in recent weeks, shared in news feeds and on the walls of many Facebook users, including in Israel, where nearly half the country's poulation uses the popular social network.

There are some things in the photo -- other than the situation, which is not beyond the realm of possibility -- that are not quite right. The Israeli army doesn't use AK-47s. The boots and jacket are not part of the Israel Defense Forces uniform, some have noted. Others are sure the photo is entirely staged.

A Facebook group called "I Support Israel" is spreading its own version of the picture, with a caption reading, "Fake! This is NOT an Israeli soldier," along with such comments as "They want you to believe their lies. Would you?"

The controversy, reported on Israeli news sites, has the online world buzzing. But the question remains: Is the soldier Syrian or Israeli?

According to blogger Omar Dakhane, he's neither -- and probably not a soldier, either.

"Don't believe everything you see on the Internet," he wrote on his blog. Showing the full picture from which the soldier was cropped, Dakhane says it was taken in Bahrain during a street theater performance in 2009.

Dakhane's post on the picture being fake has been widely quoted in Israeli media. "I'm glad that my blog's mission to fight hate and lies is finally having an effect," he wrote in response.

French court acquits Israeli doctor in intifada case

The French Supreme Court on Wednesday acquitted an Israeli doctor accused of slandering a Palestinian man who claimed he was injured by the IDF during the second intifada.

The Palestinian man, Jamal al-Dura, and his 12-year-old son Muhammad, became the symbol of the Al-Aqsa Intifada, when the two were caught in a fire exchange in the Netzarim Junction. The boy was killed in the incident, triggering a blame game: The Palestinians accused Israel for Muhammad's death, while Israeli officials claimed he was hit by Palestinian fire.

The father, who survived the ordeal, relayed his version before the media, showing the scars that he incurred in the incident. The claim prompted Dr. Yehuda David of Tel Hashomer Hospital to reveal that the scars were actually a result of a surgery the father had performed years earlier, after al-Dura was attacked by Hamas operatives who suspected him of collaborating with Israel.

Al-Dura decided to sue David, and last year a Paris court ruled against the doctor due to the fact he released information from al-Dura's medical records. He was ordered to compensate al-Dura with €13,000, but decided to appeal the ruling at the French Supreme Court.

"It couldn't have turned out better," David told Ynet after the ruling was overturned. "It means that I spoke the truth, and the father just lied.

"We managed to deconstruct their false statements. All the scientific evidence that we collected for the past 12 years proves that the incident was staged and fake. They made up the father's injury, and the IDF troops never shot the boy."

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke to Dr. David on Wednesday and praised him for his determination. "You are an example for the battle for the State of Israel's truth and to sticking to the righteousness of our people's way," the prime minister told him.

On Sunday, the Ministerial Committee on Legislative Affairs will discuss a bill proposing that the State fund Dr. David's legal expenses. The bill was initiated by Vice Premier Moshe Ya'alon, who had served alongside Dr. David in the army.

David has recently begun raising funds to fight what he calls the "Palestinian's false anti-Israel propaganda," and said that Ya'alon has joined the effort.

"I recently opened a Facebook page in order to collect funding for the fight against the Palestinians' mendacious propaganda," David said. "I got a phone call from Ya'alon, and on Sunday he will put a proposal on the justice minister's desk to allocate funds, and then we will take this venture on the road… This will put an end to the lies."

Two photos tweeted in the past 24 hours, both allegedly depicting the results of Israeli air strikes in Gaza in recent days, have been proven false.

1. The photo first tweeted by Khulood Badawi (@KhuloodBadawi) and later by Diana Alzeer (@ManaraRam), allegedly depicting a Palestinian girl killed by an Israeli air strike yesterday, was proven to have originated in 2006 and to have had nothing at all to do with Israeli action. This photo is now the top tweet for #Gaza, with over 300 retweets. It is completely false.

Badawi first tweeted the picture at noon on March 10, claiming it was linked to last night’s air strikes. Alzeer tweeted it on March 11, claiming the same.

Both were refuted by tweeter Avi Mayer (@avimayer), who found that the photo dated back to 2009 at least.

Further research revealed that the photo was taken in 2006 by Reuters, and that the girl, initially thought to have been killed in an Israeli air strike, was injured by falling off a swing. When confronted with this information, Alzeer stated that the photo was taken last night and forwarded to the press that day.

In fact, the photo was taken by Reuters on August 9, 2006. It was originally released with an incorrect caption, and then corrected a day later:

Alzeer later published an apology and withdrew her claims. Badawi has yet to respond.

The original tweets, however, have already been picked up by hundreds of others and continue to circulate around the web, despite having been thoroughly disproved.

What happens when the cameras turn up at the scene of an airstrike in Gaza and there simply aren’t enough Palestinian dead and injured to produce dramatic footage that can be used against Israel in the international media? We’ve seen it before. Palestinians who appear to be injured or even dead for the benefit of the TV cameras turn out to be nothing of the sort once they are no longer the focus.

This is all the more so in Gaza, where Palestinian stringers are often filming in the absence of international news crews.

The example below is taken from a BBC interview on the targeted killing of Hamas military commander Ahmed Jabari. During the interview full version here: , footage from Gaza is shown. At 2:11 mins in, a Palestinian in a beige jacket and black T-shirt, presumably injured in the aftermath of an Israeli airstrike, is picked up and taken away. Yet at 2:44 mins, the same Palestinian has staged a remarkable recovery.
