This is always trotted out by Muslimapologists as an example of "you see, Muslims don't have a monopoly on violent fanatics", does anyone know any more about it?

Well, wikipedia describes it as "a heterodox Christian cult" so I suppose it has as much relation to mainstream Christianity as the Ahmadiyya have to mainstream Islam. Since the Muslim powers wouldn't touch Ahmadiyya's with a bargpole (though they might with a scimitar), it ill becomes them to use the LRA as an example of Christianity.
On the other hand, Wikipedia goes on to say
It appears to largely function as a personality cult of its leader Joseph Kony,[10] a self-declared prophet whose leadership has earned him the nickname "Africa's David Koresh".
Perhaps "Africa's Mohammed" might be a better fit?

Qasim Rashi who himself is an Ahmadiyya uses the LRA as en excuse for the "other religions are violent too" argument

The difference is, that LRA is a local anomaly and not aspiring to take over the planet.
Islam does, by comand from Allah / Mohammad (one and the same).
