Was the Middle East in Muhammad's time really so barbaric?
Islamophiles like to make out the Middle East in Muhammad's time was barbaric and uncivilised, but was it really?

I cannot say for the whole of M.E , but by some standards,S.A seemed backward,by other standards it seemed not to be that backward. For example one tribe Jalhils supposedly buried their new-born infant daughters alive for lack of means of providing them with necessities. It is said that male to female ratio was skewed. But there existed many female poets/poetesses and traders , Khadija , first wife of Muhammad, being a prime example. While numbers of males went on rise due to being more valued,it also came down heavily due to incessant wars and is thus said to have got balanced.
Arab clans regularly clashed at times when the months were not considered holy. They are known to carry out austerities and penances when they were about to visit holy places, a practice still prevalent amongst Hindus of sub-continent.They are said to set aside their weapons in the holy months and while visiting holy places. Now that is also in sync with what Hindus do.
It is also said that human sacrifice was made to the planet Venus by pagan Arabs. Now this practice was once prevalent across the world including amongst Jews(story of Jephtah) who later abandoned it.Similiarly after embracing Islam, even Arabs abandoned it.However when one ponders at the scale of wars unleashed due to creation of new religions based on firm belief of monotheist moral superiority, human sacrifice might pale in comparision in the number of casualities it might have caused/unleashed.

palli or halli in Dravidian languages means a village just like gaav in Aryan languages means a village.palli or halli in Aryan Mauryan Imperial era around 200 B.C designates a tribal hamlet. So many of those in South India are indeed descendants of tribals and are still keeping up that heritage.

Now Levant and other places of M.E were under direct rule of either Byzantium or Persia from whom Muhammad borrowed principles of Last Judgement,One Supreme God,five times prayer a day etc.So by his standards they might not have been barbaric.

The meaning of word Jalhiliya is more or less synonymous with barbaric.Means you are not civilised, decent or well-mannered or that you are savage, brute etc.uncung wrote:what do you mean barbaric?

WELL, pre-Islamic Arabia was relatively peaceful and tolerant. It had different communities living there next door to one another, a sort of early "multiculturalism"...
Then the Muslims came along bringing bloodshed and hatred all round. Entire civilisations wiped out. Unprecedented carnage, not remotely equalled by the worst tyrants who ever lived.
Sadly people have forgotten this lesson of history today, so we are learning it all over again.
Hopefully people wake up to the danger and deal with it in time. It is 5 minutes before 12. If nothing is done, we are going the way of the Meccans, the Persians, the Indians, the Afghans, the Egyptians and the Byzantines. Then, when all are either dead or Muslim zombies, then Muslims will fight each other, each group claiming to be the only "real" Muslims.
By the end, we have a burnt out earth, with few surviving, with all civilisation lost for ever.
Islam is a great destroyer of civilisation.

well, I don't think you are a "bad character", but Islam has damaged you.
And Islam destroys ALL civilisation, but turning people into savages. Islam switches off empathy. Without empathy, people loose their humanity.

What is wrong with paganism?
Of the two options, I would certainly prefer paganism to Islam.

If a muslim develops some doubts about certain aspects of Islam, is that a sin?
