Does anyone have a list of those who attempted to reform Islam and what happened to them?

I think that it is important to have a list on hand to present to people who say that Islam can be reformed when history shows that it can not.

Islam has a strong built in protection against any tampering (reformation) of the meme, (see here).
It did not happen for 14 centuries, and under the present circumstances it will not happen any time soon.

A little.

The Sufis and Mu'tazelis tried to reform Islam, but obviously weren't successful. When somebody tells you Islam can be reformed, tell them this:

Quran.5:3 : Today have I perfected your religious law for you, and have bestowed upon you the full measure of My blessings, and willed that self-surrender unto Me shall be your religion.

With this verse, Muslims believe Islam is perfect, and the word of Allah. And for those reasons, can never be reformed.
