How do "Koran alone" Muslims understand this?

Postby Aksel Ankersen » Sat May 23, 2009 6:53 am

How do "Koran alone" Muslims understand the meaning of Najis and the need for purification it brings? I.e. that a Muslim must wash before prayer if he or she has had contact with Najasah.

This concept is developed in the hadith, but not in the Koran, which only states that al-Mushrikoon are Najis (at-Taubah verse 28) without explaining the implications. In the Tafsir of Ibn Kathir for instance, Najis (نجس) is contrasted with Tahoor (طهور), and water is explained to always be Tahoor:

Allah says:

وَأَنزَلْنَا مِنَ السَّمَآءِ مَآءً طَهُوراً

(and We send down pure water from the sky), meaning, as a means of purifying it. Abu Sa`id said, "It was said: "O Messenger of Allah, can we perform Wudu' with the water of the well of Buda`ah For it is a well in which rubbish and the flesh of dogs are thrown. He said:

إِنَّ الْمَاءَ طَهُورٌ لَا يُنَجِّسُهُ شَيْء

(Water is pure and nothing makes it impure.)

Tafsir Ibn Kathir: al-Furqan

This terminology is introduced in the Koran, but not elucidated. How then can these concepts be properly understood without reference to hadith?

Hello Aksel,

First off, I am not sure that the words Najis and Tahir originated in the Quran (I think they were in use before the Quran).

Anyway, you are absolutely right. Understanding what these words mean exactly does require a lot of Hadith.

BTW, these two words do appear a LOT in the Arabic Bible. "Defile" and "purify" appear in the Arabic Bible, see for example:
Revelation 14:4

4These are those who did not defile themselves with women, for they kept themselves pure. They follow the Lamb wherever he goes. They were purchased from among men and offered as firstfruits to God and the Lamb.

http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?se ... ersion=28;

فَهَؤُلاَءِ لَمْ يُنَجِّسُوا أَنْفُسَهُمْ مَعَ النِّسَاءِ لأَنَّهُمْ أَطْهَارٌ، وَهُمْ يَتْبَعُونَ الْحَمَلَ حَيْثُمَا ذَهَبَ، وَقَدْ تَمَّ شِرَاؤُهُمْ مِنْ بَيْنِ النَّاسِ بَاكُورَةً لِلهِ، وَلِلْحَمَلِ،

Regards.

PS. I am NOT a Quran only Muslim, but I just wanted to comment on your post.

Thanks debunker for correcting my misunderstanding, the first translation I checked didn't appear to use the words Tahir or Najis, it would be easier if I could search the Arabic Bible with word roots, but I don't find any site offering this.

You're welcome. But you can search the words "purify" and "defile" in Biblegateway and then check the Arabic Bible version.

Speaking of avatars, Debunker look at what happened to your avatar after he moved here to Louisiana

LOL! I hope that won't ever happen to me wherever I move to...

PS Debunker have you ever been to the Mongolian Grill in Ann Arbor, I loved it, we used to drive all the way from Detroit to that place.

Yes. I have been there once or twice but I'm not a big fan of meat and besides I like seafood a lot (it's the only thing I don't eat at home).

So you used to live in Detroit... I have been there only a few times... I don't like big cities... I like small "leafy" towns a lot better and that's exactly what Ann Arbor is!

Well Debunker, if you love seafood then you will become what became of David when he moved to Louisiana, this place is known for seafood. BTW I am allergic to shell fish, I am a compulsive meat eater :D ........ I hate living where it snows, living around Detroit was not the best of times, but I did enjoy the automotive shows :) .

Aksel Ankersen
How do "Koran alone" Muslims understand this?
it is a wonderful thread and needs to be explored further for the benefit of readers., So Aksel asks a simple question
How do "Koran alone" Muslims understand the meaning of Najis and the need for purification it brings? I.e. that a Muslim must wash before prayer if he or she has had contact with Najasah.
dear Aksel Ankersen if you speak about "Koran alone" Muslims, then the first question is ., Do we have the word "Najis" or "Najasah" in Quran???

if we don't then for Q'uran alone Muslims "Najis" becomes irrelevant. Any ways let me give the readers MUCH SIMPLER ayahs from Q'uran on your question How do "Koran alone" Muslims understand this?., In fact I wrote this in one of the responses to Mr. AhmedBahgat . Here are the ayahs from Allah book.
Ta Seen Meem. [Al Quran ; 28:1]

Ta Seen, [Al Quran ; 27:1]

Ta Seen Meem [Al Quran ; 26:1]

Ta Ha. [Al Quran ; 20:1]

Kaf Ha Ya Ein Sad. [Al Quran ; 19:1]

Alif Lam Ra. [Al Quran ; 15:1]

Alif Lam Ra. [Al Quran ; 14:1]

Alif, Lam, Mim, Ra. [Al Quran ; 13:1]

Alif Lam Ra.[Al Quran ; 12:1]

Alif Lam Ra. [Al Quran ; 11:1]

Alif Lam Ra. [Al Quran ; 10:1]

Alif Lam Meem Sad. [Al Quran ; 7:1]

Alif Lam Meem.[Al Quran ; 3:1]

Alif Lam Meem. [Al Quran ; 2:1]

These are the signs of the Book of wisdom. .. These are the signs of the obvious Book...

So How do "Koran alone" Muslims understand the above verses? ., I don't know and I am not sure any one can understand those silly Ayahs. And I don't know what wisdom is there in those verses.. .To me they are as good as SOUNDS OF DOG.. In fact they are worse., at least you can get some meaning from the sounds of a trained pet dog.

But., I must say here that I consider such meaningless verse as THE BEST VERSES OF Q'uran. Such Q'uranic Ayahs really don't do any harm to the society except Muhammad following Muslims must be pulling their hair out of root and going nuts to understand the meaning such ayahs. I wish whole Q'uran was like that..

with best wishes
