Of Camels, Cows and P...

No, not pigs: people.
There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio,
Than are dreamt of in your philosophy.

Just a quiet Sunday morning's web browsing, until I was pulled up short by a conversation about a Twit who complained that when he tried to cure his itching eyes with "9 day old urine with floaty things in it", lo and behold: it made them worse.
There was I, mocking people whose religion had them thinking camel or cow urine was medicine. Seems you don't need to be a Muslim or a Hindu, just crazy. Or, to be fair, ill-informed: because someone pointed the conversation to a web site that actually advocates "urine therapy" for the eyes (although I fancy even they'd draw the line at stale, rotting urine). To make matters worse, a commenter on that site then advocated eating another person's faeces. It must be fresh, though - not in capsules*.
Further commenters advised against such practices, but I fancy any damage had aready been done by the time some people got that far.

*There is a medical procedure using faeces from a healthy donor to introduce beneficial bacteria to a patient's intestines, but under laboratory conditions and via enema or capsules. DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME!

Urea, normally artificially made, not taken from urine, as a cream, is used for some skin complaints, mostly involving dry and itchy skin. I never heard of using urine on eyes... yuk...

I once heard a story about the days when urea was first synthesised commercially. A group of chemists went on a factory visit and were given coffee with a big bowl of sugar. No matter how much sugar they stirred in, the coffee never got any sweeter. Then their hosts explained that they were demonstrating their new product: urea, not sugar!
